Oscar Micheaux

Today's Mini-Bio is on Oscar Micheaux

    Oscar Micheaux is noted as the first African-American director. Micheaux was born on January 2nd, 1884 in Metropolis, Illinois. He was the 5th Child of 13 siblings. When Micheaux was 17, he moved to Chicago with his brother then began working as a waiter. In 1910 he married his first wife Orlean McCraken. McCraken felt that Micheaux was not paying attention to her, so when he went on a business trip she reportedly had a baby and emptied his bank account, he then married Alice B. Russell in 1926. Micheaux was famous for many films such as The Conjure Woman. Micheaux died on March 25th, 1951 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
